Al Ahly secured a late 1-0 victory over Haras El Hodoud on Wednesday in the 16th round of the Nile Egyptian League, thanks to a stoppage-time goal from Moroccan forward Achraf Bencharki.
Bencharki found the net in the 93rd minute, controlling the ball with his chest inside the penalty area before sending it past the goalkeeper. Al Ahly strugged to break down a stubborn Haras El Hodoud defense, controlling play for most of the match but the late goal from Bencharki spared Ahly from sharing the points.
Wednesday's performance marks Bencharki’s second consecutive match with a goal for Al Ahly, having also scored in his debut during the Cairo Derby against Zamalek. Ahly move back into first place for the time being, level on points with Pyramids FC but ahead due to scoring more goals.
Pyramids, with one less match played than Ahly, can retake top spot when they play at Al Ittihad on Friday.
Despite the result, Haras El Hodoud remain in a good place in their first season back in the top flight, sitting in 6th as the end of the first phase in the league approaches.
