A strong and sturdy defense is paying dividends for Rivers United and the club from Port Harcourt maintained their status as top dogs in the Nigeria Premier Football League over the weekend. A scorching long range drive from Aniekeme Okon around the half hour mark was the difference for Rivers in a 1-0 victory over Kano Pillars on Sunday, moving the leaders three points clear at the top of the log.

Rivers benefitted from the misfortune of second placed side Remo Stars who fell 2-0 to Niger Tornadoes in Minna. Another top-5 club, El Kanemi Warriors, also dropped points in a 0-0 draw with Bayelsa United.

The story of the competition so far is top division newcomers Ikorodu City. The club is the only NPFL club from Lagos, replacing Sporting Lagos following their relegation last season. Ikorodu took down Akwa United with a decisive 4-1 victory to move into third position five points back of Rivers United. The Oga Boys, founded in 2022, are a rising club to watch as they look to build upon a dream start to life in the top division.
