Kukoma Ntopwa Queens FC won the Malawi national women’s championship after beating Silver Strikers ladies 4-3 on post-match penalties in Blantyre on Saturday.
Ntopwa were six minutes away from being crowned champions without hurdles after they had gone ahead through Irene Khumalo’s 14th-minute strike at a packed Mpira Stadium.
However, Silver responded with six minutes remaining on the clock through Irene Khumalo’s goal. However, Ntopwa dragged themselves from the jaws of defeat with Irene Khumalo’s 84th-minute strike.
The tie in regulation time dragged the game into post-match penalties which saw Ntopwa convert all their spot kicks to win the championship they claimed two seasons ago.
Ntopwa will now represent Malawi in the COSAFA Club Women’s Championship whose overall winner will progress to the CAF Women’s Champions League final.
