Kenya international Michael Olunga scored his 10th goal of the campaign as Al Duhail SC held on to beat 10-man Al Shahaniya SC 2-1 in a Qatar Stars League fixture at Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium on Friday.
The Harambee Stars captain started the game with two missed chances, the first in the 10th minute when he was put through but could not find the target, and the second five minutes later, when his glancing header from a corner, went inches wide.
Duhail continued to attack for the opener, with Olunga leading the way. In the 34th minute, Olunga laid a neat left-footed pass to former Manchester City and Algerian winger Hakim Ziyech, but the latter’s effort was not strong enough to trouble keeper Shehab Ellethy.
After a 0-0 first half, Olunga put the Red Knights ahead in the 46th minute when he latched onto a long ball from goalkeeper Salah Zakaria before slotting home. However, Al Shahaniya were level in the 65th minute when Pelle van Amersfoort converted from the penalty spot.
However, Duhail responded almost immediately to grab the second of the night through overlapping defender Karim Boudiaf in the 70th minute. Francesco Antonucci, who had just come on for Al Shahaniya in the closing stages, was sent off in the stoppages, as Olunga’s Duhail held on to snatch their 12th league win of the season.
The win saw Duhail open a one point lead at the top with 38 points from 17 matches. They have won 12 matches, drawn two and lost three. For Olunga, he has now scored 10 league goals from 14 matches and provided two assists.
