Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro has admitted that his team knew it will not be a walk in the park against Cape Town City at Orlando Stadium on Saturday.

The South African giants staged a superb comeback to edge out Cape Town City 2-1 in a closely fought Betway Premiership fixture. It was the visitors, who struck the opener in the 21st minute through Haashim Domingo, who calmly slotted home.

Tshegofatso Mabasa reduced the deficit for Pirates in the 67th minute, after latching onto a cross from substitute Mohau Nkota. Pirate continued to attack for the winner and they were finally rewarded in the 87th minute when Goodman Mosele, another substitute, found the back of the net for the killer blow.

“The teams are used to competing in a special way when they come here in front of big crowds and in front of Orlando Pirates,” Riveiro told SuperSport TV as quoted by FARPost. “We knew it; Cape Town City is one of those teams, who run the extra mile against us. It’s fine, [we won] three points.”

On why he substituted Makhehleni Makhaula for Mosele, Riveiro explained: “We needed a different type of midfielder at that moment of the game. That was a situation that we tried to get benefit with our midfielders because of the way they were defending in one of the sides.

“Mosele is a different profile than Cash [Makhaula]. We had Makhaula in the first 45 minutes, and Mosele completed the game.”

The victory kept Pirates second on the league table with 36 points from 15 matches.
