Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro has credited their two quick fire goals for the crucial 2-1 victory against Mamelodi Sundowns in their top-of-the-table Betway Premiership fixture at FNB Stadium on Sunday.
The Buccaneers stunned their bitter rivals with two goals in the first five minutes courtesy of Relebohile Mofokeng to head into the half-time break with a 2-0 cushion.
At the start of the second half, Sundowns looked the better side as they searched to cut the deficit and they benched Peter Shalulile for Arthur Sales. Their efforts were finally rewarded in the 66th minute when Khuliso Mudau, latched onto a cross from Iqraam Rayners to beat Pirates’ goalkeeper Sipho Chaine.
“Yeah, well executed. Difficult to play against Sundowns, trust me, so difficult. They are so good,” Riveiro told SuperSport TV after the game as quoted by idiskitimes. “We started very well getting the lead.
“We want to be in advantage. Finally, you know, faced one game against them, and be us, the ones who is leading the game. Getting the double lead, it was something else. Obviously, it was a stormy beginning of the game from the boys. They really trust on what we were doing on the field and the consequences, excellent performance.
“Obviously suffering a little bit in the second period, but not much. We managed to contain them, usually in areas where we are not used to defend that close to Chain.
“But congratulations to the players, because they managed to show, who they are when we when we are in the right in the right space.”
The outcome helped the Buccaneers to reduce the gap between them and the Brazilians to 15 points and they still have four games in hand. The victory further enabled Pirates to earn revenge having lost 4-1 to Sundowns in the first round meeting.
