Orlando Pirates will be favourites on paper in Soweto derby – admits Nabi

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi believes they have a chance to beat rivals Orlando Pirates despite the latter heading into the Betway Premiership Soweto derby as the favourites.


Amakhosi will host Pirates at the FNB Stadium on Saturday. The 107th league match between the two giants is already sold out, a testament to its importance, with eager supporters counting down the days.


Speaking ahead of the game, the Tunisian coach said as quoted by SABC News: “It is true Pirates have been building for some time, and they will be favorites on paper, but it will be 50/50 and we will have chances to win the match whoever takes their chances will win on the day and we hope it will be us.”


Pirates coach Jose Riveiro is counting on the team’s good run in the Caf Champions League to beat their rivals.


“So, far they have played an important role in the team in our team in our freshness I really believe when you get players from your development, they can give you something that no other players can give and they have shown in our matches on the continent and I hope they can show on Saturday,” said Riveiro.


Over the previous 106 league meetings, Chiefs hold the upper hand, boasting 45 victories compared to Pirates' 25. The intensity of their encounters is further highlighted by 36 drawn matches.


Looking beyond league meetings, when including cup encounters, the teams have fought it out a total of 180 battles, with Kaizer Chiefs’ 74 victories dominating historically over Pirates’ 47, with 54 draws and five abandonments, owing to various circumstance.
