Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro admitted that their hard-fought win against Magesi FC was not their best game in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) this season.
The year 2024 concluded with maximum points for Pirates, who claimed an important win to wrap up the year after beating Magesi 1-0 in their Betway Premiership clash played at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday, making it two wins in as many matches.
The victory also kept them within touching distance of top spot with the only opening third of their league campaign wrapped up. Their opponents meanwhile continued to endure a miserable spell, falling to a fourth consecutive defeat to remain bottom of the table.
After a host of missed chances, the Buccaneers were quick to take full advantage of their numerical superiority, edging ahead in the 45th minute through Relebohile Mofokeng, who dummied outside the box before producing a brilliant effort that beat the outstretched Chipezeze on its way to the bottom corner.
“The most important thing is usually the result and today was really difficult circumstances to play football for both teams, not only for Pirates, let’s be fair, and due to that, probably not our best game, not the best entertainment we could give the fans,” Riveiro said as quoted by idiskitimes.
“They came here in numbers to support the team. But I’m happy that we managed [to keep a clean sheet] and a good performance in the first half to take three points, to keep pushing, keep running, keep fighting.
“[It’s] just one way to close an exceptional 2024 for the club, this team, this group with one victory. Last year with the same game, same performance, we could finish this game with a 1-1 or even worse, so the team is competing very well.”
