Former Technical Director of the Ghana Football Association Francis Oti Akenteng, has emphasized the need for a clear criteria for appointing captains of the national teams.
Oti-Akenteng made the call due to the recent controversies surrounding the appointment where the armband shuttled between Jordan Ayew and Mohammed Kudus.
Ghana coach, Otto Addo’s decision to not invite captain Andre Ayew has created massive debate in both the media circles and among Ghanaians in general.
The experienced football brain said: “I think the Ghana Football Association should sit down and come out with a laid-down criteria that will be used in appointing national team captains,” Oti Akenteng told Asempa FM.
“Usually, when a new coach comes in, he is unsure whether to maintain the old captain or appoint a new one, and when he does, problems arise, even though there is some sort of criteria,” Akenteng added.
Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey, Mohammed Kudus, and Jordan Ayew have all strapped the captain’s armband at different points.
Andrew Ayew was to lead with Thomas Partey and goalkeeper, Richard Ofori as deputies however with Andre and Ofori out of the squad and Partey missing the last two AFCON qualifiers, Otto Addo is left scratching his head for answers.
