Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey’s second half goal was not enough as Arsenal dropped valuable points at home to Brentford on Saturday.
The Gunners, four days after their stunning 3-0 win against Real Madrid in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarterfinal, were looking to add Brentford to the list of casualties but the final whistle ended the game at 1-1 at the Emirates.
It was Kieran Tierney who headed home Ethan Nwaneri’s cross after 26 minutes, but the Scotland international was offside and VAR came to Brentford’s rescue.
However, Partey opened the scoring for Arsenal after 61 minutes from Declan Rice’s perfect pass but Brentford responded through DR Congo forward Yoane Wissa 13 minutes later.
Mikel Arteta was dealt a big blow as Partey, who operated as a makeshift right back, was withdrawn with 20 minutes left to play. They will head into the Champions League return leg without the Ghana midfielder if he fails to pass a fitness test early enough.
Partey, 30, increases his season’s tally to 4 goals from 30 matches this season with Yoane Wissa now scoring 15 goals in 29 matches with two assists to his name this season.
The draw means Liverpool will extend their lead to 13 points if they beat West Ham at Anfield on Sunday.
