South African star Percy Tau was nowhere in sight for Qatar SC’s playing squad as they beat hosts Al Sadd 1-0 on Thursday evening in a league match.

Moroccan centre-back Romain Saiss’s second-half own goal gifted Qatar SC the win at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium, taking their tally to 13 points in 11th position while Al Sadd remained 25 points in third place, two points behind leaders Al Duhail.

The new signing from Al Ahly debuted for Qatar last week in the 5-1 loss to Al-Nasr in the Qatari-Emirati Super Cup final and more action was expected from the South African.

However, the visitors’ coach Youssef Al-Safr had other ideas in his squad selection, which paid off with the win that kept their survival hopes alive, lying 11th in the 12-member log table.

Media reports show that Al Sadd started the match on the offensive, pegging Qatar SC to their half for most of the early minutes. The pressure nearly paid dividends as Akram Afif came close to scoring the opener only for the reigning Asian Player of the Year to be caught offside.

However, the visitors found a way to score with seven minutes remaining in regulation time when Saiss headed the ball past his goalkeeper while trying to clear a corner kick to give Qatar SC the lead.

Al Sadd mounted a late response with Saiss seeking to redeem himself in the dying minutes of the game but his effort was ruled out for offside.
