Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco continues to elicit debate and discussions in the West African nation.

Top brass in Ghana’s political and football landscape have poured out their frustration following the horrendous performance of the senior national male team.

One of the topmost personalities to have shown his displeasure is former Ghana president, John Dramani Mahama. JDM, as he is affectionately known, attributes the despicable state of the Black Stars to poor governance by the current administration.

“Everything has broken down.Even the Black Stars which gives us joy has been thorn into shreds. “We have never missed the Africa Cup of Nations in the last 20-years but it we have missed qualification for the first time in 20 years.

“Sudan and other countries have all bypassed Ghana to qualify for the AFCON and this is the result of bad governance by the current administration.” John Mahama said during his campaign tour of the Eastern Region of Ghana.

The four time African champions finished bottom of group F - garnering a paltry 3 points from six qualifying matches behind winners Angola, Sudan in second and Niger in third.

The luckluster performance has equally ruffled the feathers of many ex-internationals including Frank Odoi, who scored a brace in Ghana’s 1965 AFCON final glory against Tunisia.

“When you have all these so called international players coming back home because they play in Europe and so we feel they are better than the local boys, the man we have a problem.

“Because the point is that, have you been monitoring these guys playing overseas to see how they are performing.  You are not doing that. You assume because they are making money and they are playing overseas so they are better than some of your local players.” Frank Odoi told Radio Gold Sports.

The 24 nations have been confirmed for Morocco 2025 with no debutants heading to the festival. The biggest abstentees for the continental football showpiece would be Ghana and Guinea.
