Former Ghana midfielder Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu has attributed the national team’s decline to poor player transition from the youth level.
Badu was a key member of the U-20 side that swept the board in Africa and the world- winning the Youth Tournament in Rwanda and the World Cup in 2009 in Egypt.
Key members of the squad like, Badu, Dominic Adiyiah, captain Andre Ayew, Rabiu Mohammed, goalkeeper Daniel Agyei, Jonathan Mensah just to mention a few walked into the senior national with a number of them playing at the 2010 AFCON in Angola and subsequent tournaments.
The former Udinese midfielder believes the poor transitioning of players from the junior national teams to the Black Stars is a key issue affecting the progress of football in Ghana.
“If the national teams are not doing well, whatever you do, we’ll talk about it. So, it’s a problem of the transition,” he told Joy Sports. “How we transition players from the junior national teams to the Black Stars, and the quick solutions we want.
“Listen, some years ago, we had a history of how we managed our national teams. It didn’t start with the current FA. It has been like this since our time with the under-20s, when seven of us were promoted to the Black Stars.”
The Black Stars failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in 21 years as they will not be in Morocco for this year’s tournament.
The team has not also made it past the group stage of any major tournament since 2019.
