With Mamelodi Sundowns having ejected loyal servant Manqoba Mngqithi on Tuesday and appointed Miguel De Azevedo Cardoso as the new handler, Pan Africa Football looks at the potential suitors for the dismissed coach.
Mngqithi spent 12 years at Sundowns enjoying decent pay in a stable environment with limitless resources and quality players signed from all over the world, often competing with European clubs on the transfer market.
The 53-year-old has to reset the button and adapt to harsher environments working on a shoestring budget and with the axe hanging over his shoulders from trigger-happy PSL club owners.
The former teacher served Sundowns as an assistant coach, senior coach and head coach before paying the price for failing to better his successor Rulani Mokwena’s standards. In a statement, Sundowns did not mince words that Mngqithi paid the price for the “recent unsatisfactory results.”
What next now for Mngqithi?
Richards Bay
The Durban-based side is badly in need of salvation lying bottom of the table with just five points from 10 games and recently sacked coach Brandon Truter. Assistant coaches Ronnie Gabriel and Sboniso Gumede are holding fort and it wouldn’t come as a surprise if the management of The Natal Rich Boys hired Mngqithi.
Golden Arrows
A return to Golden Arrows might also make logical sense considering that they were the last club Mngqithi worked for before being lured by the riches of Sundowns. Mabhudi Khenyeza and Musa Bilankulu are the current coaches of the Durban side that lie in sixth place, just eight points behind joint leaders Sundowns and Orlando Pirates. Bringing Mngqithi on board would, therefore, solidify the coaching panel.
AmaZulu
Strange things happen in the PSL, so you cannot rule out Usuthu getting Mngqithi to make it a three-member coaching panel alongside newly-appointed Arthur Zwane and Vusimuzi Vilakazi.
Kaizer Chiefs
Nasreddine Nabi is in charge as Chiefs head coach. However, with Arthur Zwane having left to pursue other interests at AmaZulu, you get a sense there is a vacancy for the Head of Academy at the Glamour Boys. Mngqithi would be a perfect fit for such a role owing to his vast coaching experience spanning over 15 years.
