The president of Angolan top flight side Primeiro de Agosto, Gouveia de Sa Miranda, promised fans a change in the club’s transfer approach at a press conference held in Luanda. Miranda stated the club lost financial gains due to administrative negligence over the transfer of players.
Miranda noted the situation seemingly forced the club to lose potential gains. “The environment was not ideal. From now on the situation will not be repeated. We failed to get any return from players sales. We were so negligent on that regard. We did not consider many factors and we blame ourselves for the failure.”
Primeiro de Agosto is the second most successful club in Angola but last season they finished seventh in the top flight Girabola. Miranda said the club could have gotten millions from the sale of players developed by the club. The military club president highlighted Ary Papel and Gelson Dala as notable examples.
Papel left in 2020 to join Saudi side Al Taawoun and Dala left the Luanda club in 2017 to play for Portuguese giants Sporting CP. Miranda thinks the club could have benefited more by selling the players rather than earning nothing by allowing them to leave for free. The two players were each highly sought after talents from Angola when they left.
Miranda noted the situation will now be rectified. “We take full responsibility. We were careless and did not properly handle it. We will continue to work to improve the situation now. We try to avoid the mistakes.”
Separately, the club has reportedly settled its debt to former Serbian coach Srđan Vasiljević as they shift their financial priorities. Primeiro de Agosto are currently third in the Girabola with 28 points, five points shy of record winners Petro Atletico.
