Troubled Betway Premiership side Royal AM have been thrown out of the 2025 Nedbank Cup following financial problems that continue to threaten their future in South Africa’s elite league.
South Africa’s National Soccer League (NSL) decided to expel Royal AM from the competition on Monday, the league governing body said in a statement.
“Having reviewed these representations, the Executive Committee, in concurrence with Royal AM and the Curator, resolved that Royal AM Football Club will take no further part in the Nedbank Cup competition this season, in the interest of time,” NSL’s statement reads.
This means that the Nedbank Cup fixture between Milford FC, whose cup duel with Royal AM was previously postponed, and Sekhukhune United FChas been scheduled for March 2 at Princess Magogo Stadium.
The South African Revenue Service (SARS) accuses club owner Shawn Mkhize of owing the tax regulator; hence, the team is under curatorship following a preservation order the tax collector obtained.
Royal AM courted controversy after failing to pay its players and coaches outstanding salaries for December 2024. The Durban-based team eventually settled the dues while attributing the delays to legal issues with SARS.
The off-the-field controversies have taken their toll on the otherwise promising club which went five consecutive league games without a win before failing to honour its games. Royal AM currently anchor the PSL log table.
