After presiding over a four-game winless run in Botola Pro League, Wydad Athletic Club coach Rulani Mokwena has insisted that he would be the first to leave the Moroccan outfit if consensus was that he was the problem.
South African news outlets quoted the former Mamelodi Sundowns coach saying this in a post-match interview after Wydad drew one-all away to IR Tanger on Saturday to drop to third place on the log table, seven points behind champions-designate RSB Berkane.
“When you bring me to Wydad, you bring me with a certain style of play, and I will never abandon my style of play. I’m sorry I have worked very hard as a coach to build, study, and research what works,” iDiski Times quoted him saying.
“It worked for me in the past and I am sure it will work here, it needs a little bit of time but I must tell you, I’m in a position where I love the club so much and I can tell you ‘guys, if I am the problem for Wydad, believe me, I will be the first one to ask for permission to go back to South Africa.”
He added: “If I am the problem, I give the president and the board full responsibility to relieve me from duties. I don’t want to hold Wydad back. If Wydad feels they can be better without me, then believe me, I love this club too much to be the problem. That is it. Let’s not question the style of play. I mean, you saw the chances we had, we should have scored, but that has nothing to do with the style of play.”
Apart from domestic assignments, Wydad have tougher fixtures ahead of them this season, including against Manchester City at the FIFA Club World Cup on June 18, 2025, and Juventus four days later.
The 38-year-old joined the Moroccan giants last year after parting ways with Sundowns.
