Ugandan international Sandra Nabweteme starred with a brace as Santos Laguna kicked off their Liga MX Femenil campaign in style, defeating Atlas 3-1 at Estadio Jalisco, Guadalajara, Mexico.
The Crested Cranes striker converted two penalties, one in each half to lead her team to victory. Nabweteme opened the scoring in the 5th minute from the spot, setting the tone for an exciting encounter.
Atlas equalized early in the second half through María Paula Salas in the 49th minute. However, Santos Laguna, under the leadership of Karla Maya, maintained their attacking intent.
Nabweteme struck again from the penalty spot in the 61st minute, securing her first brace of the season and putting Santos ahead. Lia Romero added a third goal late on to seal the emphatic win.
With this result, Santos Laguna sits atop the Liga MX Femenil standings after matchday one. Nabweteme's clinical finishing has set the stage for what could be a remarkable season for the Ugandan forward.
