Senegal-born striker Abdoul Kadre Gueye was the biggest winner of the 2024 Mozambique Football League (MFL) awards, bagging the Golden Boot and Player of the Year gongs.
Gueye, who was recently naturalized as a Mozambican, earned the recognition after scoring a league leading 14 goals and winning eight Man-of-the-Match awards. His exploits guided Associação Black Bulls (Black Bulls FC) to the 2024 Mocambola championship.
A statement from the awards organisers reads: “Kadre stood out as a key player in Black Bulls' performance throughout the season. His creativity, vision, and decisive impact in crucial moments earned him the highest recognition in the championship. This award solidifies Kadre as one of the great talents in current Mozambican football.”
There was more dominance for Black Bulls as their shot stopper Ernane Siluane won the Best Goalkeeper accolade, the club’s mentor Helder Duarte was named Coach of the Year whereas club president Junaide Lalgy scooped the Best Manager's prize.
There were also more recognitions for veteran Elias Domingues Pelembe who claimed the HCB Silver Ball, a reward for the 41-year-old UD Songo’s winger’s consistency and leadership on the field.” The HCB Bronze accolade went to Elias Macamo from Desportivo de Nacala.
In the media category, Raimundo Zandamela of Jornal Desafio, a sports weekly newspaper, was named the league’s Best Print Reporter of the season while Jose Mario Zangado of Clube Ferroviário de Maputo earned the Best Photo Journalist Award.
Alfredo Junior of LanceMZ got the Best Digital Media Journalist of the Year award, the Best TV Reporter recognition went to Rannylson Afonso of TV Sucesso while Castro Jorge of RM Desporto received the Best Radio Reporter crown.
Hidroeléctrica de Cahora Bassa sponsors cash prizes and miniature trophies for the award winners.
The actual awards ceremony was not held because of the post-election protests in the former Portuguese colony.
