20-year-old central defender Ousmane Diao is rising quickly up the ladder in European club football and his latest exploit came at a crucial moment for top Danish club FC Midtjylland on Thursday.
The Senegalese scored the match winner in a 4-2 victory for Midtjylland over title rivals FC Copenhagen, moving his club into top spot by a two-point margin over Copenhagen. Diao rose up to head in a corner kick from Valdemar Byskov, his seventh goal of the campaign in all competitions.
With Midtjylland now the leaders, a difficult six-match stretch awaits in the Championship stage of Denmark's Superliga. Two clashes home and away against FC Nordsjælland are up next and Midtjylland will still have to travel away to face Copenhagen on May 11.
Diao, who spent two seasons in the Portuguese second tier with Mafra before upgrading to the top Danish club, has emerged as a key player. He has played nearly every minute in Midtjylland's last fifteen matches when available and appears set to draw plenty of attention from bigger European leagues in the coming month against strong competition in the Danish top flight. Diao has made forty appearances in all competitions this season.
