Simba SC midfielder Denis Kibu has explained how a pep talk from head coach Fadlu Davids enabled them to defeat CS Sfaxien 2-1 in their matchday three fixture of the Caf Confederation Cup on Sunday.
In the Group A fixture at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium, the Wekundu wa Msimbazi suffered an early setback when Hazem Haj-Hassen put the Tunisian outfit ahead with only three minutes played.
However, Simba responded with a goal of their own four minutes later when Jean Ahoua set up Kibu to level matters. The first half ended in a 1-1 draw and with Sfaxien seeking their first win in the group, they continued to knock on Simba’s door.
However, it was Simba, who had the last laugh when Kibu rose the highest to power home a thunderous header for the second in the stoppages after being set up by Yusuph Kagoma.
“Football is a game of mistakes, we did a mistake but did not give up, from the first half and the second half, we kept going and fighting, we never gave up,” Kibu told Pan-Africa Football.
“We did our best, we battled, we knew the fans had given up but as players we did not give up, the coach told us to continue battling even after we conceded with only three minutes played, he said we will score, and we eventually scored and won the game,” said Kibu.
On his scoring form this season, Kibu said: “I don’t focus on myself on scoring or not scoring, my most important focus is for the team to win, I may not score today but score tomorrow, but what I always look at is the performance of the team, it is not about me.”
Group A has three teams tied with six points. CS Constantine, who suffered a 3-2 defeat against Bravo do Maquis in the other game, are top with six points, while the Mozambican outfit are second with six and Simba third with six.
