Simba SC head coach Fadlu Davids believes the mentality of never giving up enabled his side to beat JKT Tanzania 1-0 in a Mainland Premier League fixture on Tuesday.
The Tanzania Mainland Premier League leaders found a goal from Jean Charles Ahoua in the second half stoppage time to prevail against a stubborn JKT side and maintain their lead at the top of the table.
“It is huge compliment to the players for sticking to the plan, for going from the first minute until the end trying to score, they (JKT) had really zero shorts on target against us and gave us no trouble, so good performance defensively for not allowing the opponent any counter attacks but that is what it was,” the South African coach told Pan-Africa Football.
“We have to give credit to JKT they had a fantastic defensive set up and tried to hit us on the counters but I now want to urge the Simba fans to keep believing in the team, you know we will never give up and that is the mentality, that is the culture that we have been trying to create here, against Mashujaa we scored last minute, CS Sfaxien last minute today again last minute and we will never give up.
“What we need is our fans to keep pushing us, to keep rallying behind the team, we knew it was going to be tough against JKT, it was a fourth game in a very short period of time after Sfaxien and the two league matches in between and now today we knew what to expect it was going to be tough but a huge compliment to the players, we have one to go before we switch our football to Caf Confederation Cup campaign."
On the overall display from his players, Davids said: “We should have scored early in the game and in the second half we had big chances to score but that is the mentality, if you don’t score in the first half keep going and if you can’t score in the second half keep going.
"In 90 minutes you can be 2-0 down but keep pushing, keep fighting that is the mentality we have created and that is the mentality we always have, we always get a chance and we will always score.”
The win enabled Simba to stretch their lead to 37 points, four more than second-placed Young Africans (Yanga SC) and third-placed Azam FC.
