The Somali Football Federation (SFF) has named a new head of the Referee Committee after an executive board meeting. SFF president Ali Abdi Mohamed, in a surprise twist, helped his former presidential race rival Wiish Yabarow to be named the referee committee chairman. SFF president backed Yabarow in the executive board meeting to be the referee committee head.

Yabarow vied for the hot seat at SFF presidential election in March 2023 but Mohamed beat him for the top job in Somali football. The election was tight after a government intervention, parallel election and a bitter leadership dispute among candidates. Yabarow then took the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) where he lost the case.

Mohamed said he has put the rivalry aside to help football in Somalia. “After every rivalry with in the football community, there are always handshakes, love and friendship. For example, two football teams fight in the pitch for 90 minutes and they end the fight with hug and handshakes. All they fight is to win the match and earn the three points” the president told SFF media.

Yabarow, a former referee, held a similar position at the referee committee before resigning in July 2022.
