South Africa: Royal AM apologises to players and coaches for delayed perks

South African side Royal AM has apologised to the team’s players and coaches for the delayed payment of salaries from December 2024.

Club president Shauwn Mkhize attributed the delays to the fact that the Durban-based club is under curatorship following a preservation order which the South African Revenue Service (SARS) obtained.

“We acknowledge the hardship this has caused and extend our heartfelt apologies to those impacted, including their families,” she said. Mkhize said her team’s management had engaged the curator to release funding for the salaries.

“While this has resulted in the temporary appointment of a curator, Mr Jaco Venter, to oversee the club’s assets and operations, we want to assure all stakeholders that Royal AM remains committed to resolving this matter as swiftly as possible,” she added.

The dictionary defines curatorship as when someone is appointed to oversee another person who cannot take care of themselves. SARS accuses Mkhize of owing the tax regulator but Pan-Africa Football could not confirm this independently.

The off-the-field controversies have taken their toll on the otherwise promising club which has gone five consecutive league games without a win and lies second from the bottom of the log table, one point ahead of basement side Magesi FC.

Mkhize hit the limelight when she became the first club owner in recent years in South Africa’s top flight after buying the Premiership status of Bloemfontein Celtic. The South African Football Players Union has since commended Royal AM management for being transparent with the players and coaches on the club’s financial situation.
