South African forward Darren Smith has experienced many different football scenes but the Cape Town native appears to have found a home in the United States.
Joining American second division side Detroit City FC ahead of the 2025 USL Championship season, Smith now has six goals in seven matches after providing both goals in Detroit's 2-0 home victory over Rhode Island FC on Saturday. The 29-year-old scored two times in a three-minute span to put the hosts beyond reach before twenty minutes had elapsed.
The Ajax Cape Town (now Cape Town Spurs) youth product now has six goals in seven matches leaving him tied atop of the US L Championship scoring charts early in the campaign. Detroit appear set to be one of the main contenders in the Eastern Conference with fourteen points from seven matches so far. The top eight clubs will qualify for the playoffs at the end of the regular season.
After time spent with Morocco's AS FAR Rabat and most recently a moderately successful spell in Finland, Smith will hope to continue his good form with a club that enjoys popular local support compared to most American clubs. Detroit will next be in action next Saturday in the USL Cup with a match at home against Pittsburgh Riverhounds.
