The Uganda U17 Boys’ National Team, the Cubs, has officially entered residential camp at the FUFA Technical Center in Njeru as preparations intensify for the TotalEnergies CAF U17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Morocco 2025.
Head coach Brian Ssenyondo welcomed 31 out of the 37 summoned players, with the remaining six expected to join soon. The team held its first training session on Tuesday, February 25, focusing on fitness assessments and tactical orientation.
Ssenyondo expressed satisfaction with the early progress, emphasizing the importance of building team chemistry. “We are delighted with the commitment shown by the boys so far. The first activities have been mostly about getting them into the rhythm, orientation of players, and assessing fitness levels,” he noted.
The Cubs face a tough challenge in Group A, drawn alongside hosts Morocco, Tanzania, and Zambia—teams with strong youth football backgrounds. Despite the difficult draw, Ssenyondo remains optimistic about Uganda’s prospects.
“Our goal remains to qualify for the FIFA U17 World Cup, and we believe we have the talent and discipline to achieve that,” he stated. Uganda last competed in the U17 AFCON in 2019, where they earned four points in the group stage but fell short of advancing.
In 2021, the Cubs qualified again, but the tournament was canceled due to the resurgence of the COVID-19 pandemic. With high expectations and a determined squad, Ssenyondo and his team are eager to make history by securing a place at the FIFA U17 World Cup.
