The Uganda Cup provides ample opportunities for clubs outside the top tier Premier League to make an impact and second division side Kataka FC are the latest club to gain recognition after advancing to the semifinals on Tuesday.
Kataka, despite being reduced to ten players, held Premier League side Police FC to a 0-0 draw before advancing 3-0 in a penalty shootout. The Cops fired nothing but blanks on their spot kicks, missing all three attempts while Kataka were a perfect 3 for 3.
The club from Mbale in Uganda's Eastern Region are set for a midtable finish in the second division FUFA Big League but now they have an opportunity to gain national notoriety. Kataka will now get a chance to rub elbows with top sides Kitara FC, KCCA FC and Vipers SC who overcame SC Villa 1-0 on Monday to qualify for the final four.
Vipers advanced courtesy of Milton Karisa's goal in the 89th minute. A powerful shot from distance by Abdul-Karim Watambala was pushed high into the air by Villa goalkeeper Jean Braddy Wokorach and Karisa snuck in to head by the scrambling keeper.
The four semifinalists await the draw to see who they will face next. Whoever they are drawn with, Kataka FC will be eagerly anticipating a shot at Ugandan giants KCCA or Vipers as well as defending cup champions Kitara.
