Stellenbosch FC coach Steve Barker has hailed forward Ashley Cupido’s improved performance that saw him earn Man of the Match honours in their 2-1 Betway Premiership win over Magesi FC on Tuesday.
Barker said this after Cupido’s effort caused an own goal by Magesi on the opening goal before Cupido turned scorer to clinch maximum points for the Western Cape-based team.
“It’s nice for him to be getting on the scoresheet considering Bradley [Mojela] is out injured for the season. It wasn’t easy for him in the beginning but he is a goal scorer, so it was just a matter of time for him. We just had to keep believing in him and showing him the confidence,”’ Barker said.
The coach admitted that it took time for Cupido to adapt to the ways of Stellenbosch following his move from Cape Town Spurs.
The former Cape Town Spurs player has since taken his tally to four league goals after having netted a double in Stellies' come from behind win over TS Galaxy the previous week. Barker will once again bank on the in-form Cupido when his fifth-placed side host fourth-placed Polokwane City Friday evening.
