Stellenbosch FC coach Steve Barker has saluted his team for overcoming the challenge of playing on the road under windy and soggy conditions of Free State Stadium to beat Marumo Gallants 1-0 on Tuesday.
Barker described the Betway Premiership game as tight with limited scoring opportunities hence very challenging for both teams.
“It was a tough game. Coming here and getting the three points was not easy. There were not many big chances either way. There was a good response from them. We had one or two chances on the other end to get a second goal. It was a hard-fought win. It shows that we can win in these types of situations. Credit to the team for starting to overcome the challenges,” he explained.
The visitors needed Devin Titus’s 51st-minute goal to claim the maximum points and move to third place within 14 points away from leaders Mamelodi Sundowns. Gallants are in 13th place with 19 points from 20 games. Barker’s men are now unbeaten in six straight games across all competitions.
Royal AM, whose future hang in the balance due to a legal case, anchor the table on eight points as they are unable to play games at the moment.
Gallants’ next assignment is against second-tier league side, Durban City, in the Nedbank Cup quarterfinal on March 9 while Stellenbosch welcome Kaizer Chiefs in the same competition.
