Struggling Magesi FC of South Africa’s top-flight league have appointed Papi Zothwane as interim coach to fill the void created by Clinton Larsen’s resignation. "Papi Zothwane has been appointed head coach on an interim basis. He will be assisted by coach Jacky Ledwaba,” a statement from the club reads.
Larsen threw in the towel, announcing the news on live television after a 3-0 loss in the Carling Black Label Cup exhibition match last week saying he felt he was no longer capable of motivating the players; hence management should try someone else to change the team’s fortunes.
The first job for Zothwane will be against in-form Orlando Pirates at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday. The match was initially scheduled for New Peter Mokaba Stadium but is undergoing renovations. Zothwane was a successful player at clubs like Golden Arrows and Mamelodi Sundowns before evolving into the coaching business with a second-tier league side.
Magesi anchor the Betway Premiership table after struggling to replicate their recent cup form in the league. The rookies stunned Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 in the final to win the Carling Knockout Cup last month but they have since lost three consecutive league matches.
