The Sudan national team have a received a major setback after first-choice goalkeeper Mohamed Mustafa sustained a serious injury during Tuesday's World Cup qualifier game against South Sudan. Mustafa started both of Sudan’s World Cup qualifying games this March.

The Azam FC custodian went down injured early in the second half and it was later revealed that Mustafa tore his left ACL. Sudan national team medical doctor Mohamed Al-Naeem Suleiman said the player needs to undergo a surgical procedure and his rehabilitation could last at least six months.

The Sudan Football Association has agreed with the Qatar Football Association to cover Mustafa’s medical expenses in Doha. The goalie is currently in Tanzania as he undergoes further tests before heading to the Middle East for treatment.

Sudan coach James Kwesi Appiah will now be hoping the goalkeeper regains fitness before the September 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying games against Senegal and Togo.
