Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso believes his substitutions in the second half made the difference as they overcame AmaZulu 2-0 in a Betway Premiership tie at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium on Tuesday.
The two sides went into the half-time break tied at 0-0 but the Brazilians came back a more rejuvenated side in the second period with Peter Shalulile breaking the deadlock with his goal in the 51st minute before Arthur Sales sealed the result with his effort in the 87th minute.
“First half very narrow the game. Lack of mental freshness,” he told SuperSport TV after the match as quoted by idiskitimes. “Eventually, we were not using in the right way the length of the pitch, the width of the pitch.
“We had to do subbing in order to bring in some energy, sometimes things work out well, and sometimes they don’t. Today they did. I think it’s deserved that we win the match.”
He continued: “The second half brought something else, another energy and then to cope with the moments, we understood that we needed to change the players that were tired in order to keep the team up and alive.”
The win enabled Sundowns to return to winning ways having drawn 1-1 with Golden Arrows in their last assignment. They are now 18 points clear at the top of the 16-team league table, as they have amassed 58 points, while second-placed Orlando Pirates have managed 40, though they have played four matches less.
