Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso says they are not looking at Orlando Pirates’ matches including their games in hand insisting there focus is to win every match in their pursuit to retain the Betway Premiership title.
While Sundowns are leading the 16-team league table with 48 points from 18 matches, Pirates are following in second position with 36 points.
However, what makes the title race interesting is the fact that Pirates under coach Jose Riveiro have played three matches less. It means should Pirates win the three matches, they will cut Sundowns’ lead at the summit to three points.
But according to Cardoso, the Brazilians are not looking at Pirates’ matches but are more focused on doing their job in winning their matches.
“I don't look at the schedule of Pirates, I don’t know. I know that they [Pirates] have some games behind, so they have to play these games some moment but I don’t know if we can win ours until then... eventually, it can be an advantage, but if we also lose points, it will not be an advantage,'' said Cardoso as quoted by SowetanLive.
“So let’s wait and see. We got an advantage after their match [when they beat Pirates 4-1 almost two weeks ago], and immediately two days after, we lost these three points to Galaxy away. So, we need to focus on our job.”
He concluded: “We need to continue to win games so that we can, obviously, in the end, have many points that allow us to win, but there’s a lot of games. The other day, someone was speaking about the draw of the Champions League and I laughed a lot and said, 'Please don’t make me think about something that is so far away.'”
While Sundowns will next take on Sekhukhune United at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Wednesday, Pirates will travel to face Marumo Gallants at Free State Stadium on Saturday.
