Sundowns score a first in Africa with hosting of Club World Cup Trophy

South African champions Mamelodi Sundowns have become the first African club to welcome the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup Trophy which is on a world tour.

 

The trophy touched down in South Africa on Thursday afternoon for the first time in Africa where Sundowns are hosting the trophy due to their status as participants at the upcoming competition.

 

“Mamelodi Sundowns is the first club to welcome the #FIFACWC trophy to Africa!” the team wrote on its Facebook page.

 

Club Chairperson Thlopie Motsepe unveiled the trophy at the team’s base in Chloorkop, Pretoria in the presence of stars such as Themba Zwane who took turns to pose with it. The trophy was on a tour of Italy over the weekend with Juventus FC uniting innovation and heritage to shine a spotlight on a symbol of the future inspired by the past.

 

Sundowns will face Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund, Brazilian giants Fluminense and Ulsan HD from South Korea at the Club World Cup. The tournament, now set to take place every four years, is scheduled for the United States from 15 June to 13 July 2025.
