‘Sundowns were a little bit sloppy against Sekhukhune United’ —says Mngqithi

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Manqoba Mngqithi has said his team was a little bit sloppy during their 3-0 win over Sekhukhune United in a Betway Premiership match on Saturday.

Mngqithi said this during a pitch-side post-match interview with SuperSport Television presenter at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria after snapping a two-game winless run in all competitions.

“We were a little bit sloppy,” he said. “We made a lot of technical errors on the ball, losing the ball cheaply sometimes more especially in the attacking third and not moving the ball as fast we could. But overall, the control was good. Everything played out the way we expected.”

The Sundowns boss highlighted that the secret to their success was managing the threat Sekhukhune midfielder Lesedi Kapinga and company posed. “We controlled Kapinga very well because they are good in transition. We controlled the ball very well,” he said.

Sundowns scored via Sekhukhune defender Tresor Thsibwabwa’s own goal in the 22nd minute before Arthur Sales and Iqraam Rayners added two more goals in the second half to ensure the maximum points.

The Pretoria-based side went into Saturday’s match without seven influential players including Themba Zwane, all absent due to injury. However, depth in quality prevailed.

The defending champions went into the game after losing 2-1 to Magesi FC in the Carling Cup KnockOut Cup final the previous weekend followed by a midweek home goalless draw against Congolese side, AS Maniema Union, in the CAF Champions’ League group stage game.

The win saw Sundowns go top on 21 points after having played one game more than Orlando Pirates who face Stellenbosch FC on Sunday.
