DFB Pokal holders Bayer Leverkusen beat German football giants Bayern Munich 1-0 in the round of 16 at the Allianz Arena. Nigerian winger Nathan Tella came off the bench to score the crucial goal in the second half.
The home side were down to ten men after Manuel Neuer was given his marching order for a dangerous foul on Jeremy Frimpong in then 17th minute. Tella replaced Patrick Shick at the hour mark and scored with a header the decisive goal after nine minutes of his introduction.
Coach Xabi Alonso deployed the 25 years old winger as a lone striker and the Spaniard’s experiment worked out well as Leverkusen won the match to progress to the quarter final of the DFB Pokal.
It was Tella’s seventh game as he came from the substitute bench. He made eight Bundesliga appearances and amassed three games in the knock out competition.
The former Arsenal academy graduate was overlooked by the Super Eagles for their African Cup of Nations qualifier. He wants to continue on his good form to force another call up before the Nations Cup kicks off next year in Morocco.
Reigning German champions Bayer Leverkusen is home to four African players.
