SuperSport United head coach Gavin Hunt has revealed what helps him to keep going in the coaching career.
The 60-year-old former South African player is set to achieve 1, 000 matches in charge of South African clubs, when Matsatsantsa face Golden Arrows in the Betway Premiership at Lucas Masterpiece Moripe Stadium on Sunday.
Heading into the fixture, Hunt has coached in the PSL since 1998 and managed to win four league titles – three with SuperSport United and one with Bidvest Wits.
“I look at Broos at 70 and Alex Ferguson at about 75 and … for me, it is about the next game – keep going until the next game,” said Hunt as quoted by iDiski Times. “I don’t look too far ahead. Obviously, everybody wants a bit of security.
“You want someone to tell you things are going well; it doesn’t matter if they are going badly. You want to be told ‘keep going, you are doing the right things.
“Of course, you want something like that, but you also know the nature of this business. I don’t worry too much. I know that if I can win next week maybe I might have the job for another week.”
In a previous interview with SuperSport website, Hunt discussed how he ventured into coaching: “I went straight into coaching. Vasco da Gama was my first club. I got injured in October 1994, snapping my Achilles tendon against AmaZulu.
“I was going to be out for eight months. When the pre-season started the next January, I was still limping, and despite being at the club for 14 years, Hellenic would not give me a new contract.”
Hunt won domestic Cups with Moroka Swallows, SuperSport and Wits and also coached at Hellenic, Black Leopards, Chippa United and Kaizer Chiefs before returning to SuperSport in 2022.
