Malawi senior women’s national football team captain Tabitha Chawinga capped off a hugely successful week with a goal for Olympique Lyonnais as they tore apart Strasbourg FC 4-0 on Saturday in the French Division 1 Feminine.
Chawinga scored the last goal for Lyon hours after winning, in absentia, the Sportswoman of the Year and the Sports Personality of the Year awards during the 2024 Malawi Sports Awards gala on Friday, February 28, 2025.
She joined the scoresheet Eugenie Summer, Wendie Renard and Melchie Dumormay had put the leaders on the front foot with a commanding lead.
Reacting to the goal, the Scorchers skipper wrote on her Facebook page, saying: “We won 4-0 away to Racing Club de Strasbourg to qualify for the playoffs just after 16 matches played. I scored a 4th goal in a historical 700th match for Lyonnais since [it was] established.”
Lyon opened an eight-point gap from Chawinga’s former employers Paris Saint-Germain while Strasbourg are second from the basement.
The big win added spice to the cherry for the 28-year-old striker who provided an assist for Malawi in their 3-2 win over Zambia in a friendly last Tuesday.
Chawinga had a season to remember in 2023/24 season as she won the Golden Boot Award with 19 goals in Division 1 Féminine for her former club PSG adding to six goals in 12 UEFA Champions League appearances.
Little wonder, the 28-year-old was named the D1 Arkema Player of the Season award.
She also became the first Malawian player nominated for the prestigious Ballon d’Or in 2024.
