The Malagasy Football Federation (FMF) has challenged newly appointed coach Corentin Martins to take the Barea to the 2026 FIFA World Cup for the first time in the history of the islanders.

A statement from FMF said qualifying for the World Cup would be a tall order for the Barea but the former French international has said he is ready for the task.

“His mission will be to qualify the Barea for the 2026 World Cup. It is a tall order, but he says he is ready to work hard to achieve it,” the statement reads.

Martins, who has signed a one-year contract, has since said he has faith in the potential of the Barea players after having monitored the team at the 2019 AFCON finals in Egypt.

“For him, it is essential to capitalize on these qualities and strengthen the collective spirit of the team,” the statement adds.

FMF President Alfred Randriamanampisoa has since said he hopes Martins can deliver on his mandate of improving the Barea's performance on the international stage.

“The FMF invites all Malagasy football fans to warmly support the new coach. The unity and commitment of the supporters will be major assets to help the team achieve its ambitions,” the statement says.

The new coach will get down to business next month when the Barea face the Central African Republic and Ghana in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
