Teacher humbles student as Dynamos win Zimbabwe’s Castle Challenge Cup

Peter Kanjere

Dynamos FC coach Lloyd Chigowe prevailed over his apprentice Joel Luphahla after beating his Simba Bhora 3-1 in post-match penalties to win the Castle Challenge Cup in Harare on Saturday afternoon.

Chigowe faced his former right hand man at Rufaro Stadium where Ishe Mauchi’s header gave Simba Bhora the lead in the 62nd minute.

However, Dynamos dragged themselves back into the contest via Clive Mandivei’s leveler three minutes to full-time, dragging the contest into extra-time then post-match penalties.

Substitute Abel Gwatidzo converted the decisive spot kick to hand Chigowe the first silverware of the 2025 season. The meeting was between the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League (PSL) champions Simba Bhora and Chibuku Super Cup kings FC Dynamos.

It was the first time Chigowe faced his former workmate Luphahla in the opposite camp after the duo worked together last season to win the Chibuku Super Cup. This season, the former winger opted to pick the job at Simba.

The Challenge Cup will curtain raise the 2025 Zimbabwe PSL kick-off season which kicks off next weekend. After the Challenge Cup, Bhora will switch attention to the league race, opening the floor with a dance against FC Platinum whereas Highlanders face MWOS on day 1 of the action.

Other fixtures will see Dynamos taking on ZPC Kariba whereas Caps United and Greenfuel will sort it out in the opening week.
