Former TP Mazembe defender, Richard Kissi Boateng has described the club as one of the biggest and the best in Africa despite their struggles in continental campaign this season.

The Lubumbashi based club have made a jerky start to the 2024/25 CAF Champions League - drawing two and losing one in three opening matches. Mazembe were held to a 1-1 at home by Tanzania’s Young Africans in match week one on December 14 before losing 2-1 at Al Hilal Omdurman.

They followed it up with a goalless draw at home to MC Alger, confirming the only points gathered. They lie 3rd on the Group A table on 3 points - two less than second placed MC Alger and 7 away from leaders, Al Hilal.

Kissi Boateng, who enjoyed a stellar outing with TP Mazembe between 2013 and 2016 plus a short stint at South Africa’s Super Sports United, spoke to Pan-Africa Football on the exploits of the club.

“What makes TP Mazembe one of the biggest club in Africa is the organization, their infrastructure and everything, they are well organized and if it comes to the financial aspect, they are one of the best,” Richard Kissi Boateng told Pan-Africa Football.

“They are big in Africa because they pay their players very good, they organize every event. “Traveling with the club, you will have the best experience you have ever had in Africa because the club has its own flight and before taking off, they put money in your pocket, they make sure you enjoy comfort.

“We enjoyed every moment of our life so it reflected on the field of play. “I think TP Mazembe will win an African trophy in some years to come because it is a project they always do, they plan for it," added Boateng.

“You can see the team is not performing well but it is part of the plan because when we got there they told us the plan of the club.

“What they have put in place so for them to win a trophy again, it will not be difficult because they are a well organized team and they plan for the future. “You can see that they have recruited more young players so that in the few years they can stand firm like they did to us.”

The record DR Congo league title holders currently sit 3rd on the domestic league on 19 points - two behind second placed Tanganyika and five adrift of leaders, St Eloi Lupopo but have two outstanding games.

Kissi Boateng was capped six times for the Ghana national team and has played for local clubs, Berekum Chelsea and the defunct Liberty Professionals plus one season at Libya side, Al Ittihad Tripoli.
