The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has declared two stadiums as unfit to host domestic matches in the 2025 season kicking off next weekend.

FAM confirmed that the stadiums for Chitipa in the Northern Region and Balaka in the South did not make the grade. An independent Club Licensing First Instance Body (FIB) assessed the match venues ahead of the new season.

The body declared eleven stadiums as being eligible to host elite competitions in 2025/2026 season. FAM did two stadium inspections in January and in March 2025 and assessed 16 venues in total.

Following the inspections, the FIB convened to review submissions from the stadiums and approved eleven stadiums as follows:

Rumphi Stadium (Rumphi) Chitowe (Nkhotakota) Champion (Dowa) Silver (Lilongwe), Nankhaka (Lilongwe), Dedza (Dedza), Kamuzu (Blantyre) Mulanje (Mulanje), Karonga (Karonga) Mzuzu (Mzuzu) and Bingu National (Lilongwe).

FAM Club Licensing Manager Clement Kafwafwa told the association's media that venue owners were given enough time to address deficiencies after an initial inspection in January.

“Following our first inspection, we informed stadium owners of the required standards and necessary improvements for approval, while some addressed the issues, others did not, leading to these results," he said.

“We will continue monitoring the conditions and ensure regulations are adhered to.”

Dimba, Civil and Mpira stadiums have been placed   on standby pending minor improvements.

Interestingly, FAM owns Mpira Stadium which shares the same building with the association's head office in Blantyre. Bingu is the only stadium certified to host high profile international matches.
