There was late drama on Sunday in the ongoing 2025 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations as Zambia secured a historic qualification to the quarterfinals for the first time following a 2-1 victory over Uganda. Despite creating more goal scoring opportunities, the Uganda Cubs lacked a clinical edge in front.
Uganda had the first real chance of the match with James Bogere missing from close range. Zambia capitalized in the 20th minute when Kelvin Chipelu slipped between the Ugandan defense and goalkeeper Adrian Mukwanga to open the scoring. Uganda responded with pressure in search of an equalizer but Zambian goalkeeper Rogers Simumba stood firm.
After the break Uganda emerged the stronger side. A perfectly timed cross from Bogere was finished off by right back Elvis Torach whose powerful strike found the back of the net just minutes after the resumption.
In the 72nd minute, substitute Billy Daka had a chance to restore Zambia’s lead from the penalty spot but his effort was saved by Mukwanga. However, Daka redeemed himself as he calmly slotted home the winning goal four minutes from time.
With the win, Zambia claimed their second victory in Group A and finished second with seven points, behind group leaders Morocco. They have now qualified for their maiden U-17 AFCON quarterfinals and secured a spot at the 2025 U-17 FIFA World Cup. Uganda are still in the chase for a U-17 World Cup place by advancing to the four-team playoff featuring the third place finishers from each group.
