Nigeria under-20 national team coach Aliyu Zubairu admitted that his team finds themselves in a tough group but remain confident of reaching their target of qualifying for the FIFA U-20 World Cup.

The Flying Eagles have been paired in a tough Group B at the U-20 AFCON in April along with Egypt, Morocco and South Africa. They open their campaign in Cote d’Ivoire against five-time winners Egypt and coach Zubairu first looked into the draw for the championship.

“It’s a very good draw,” Zubairu told media men in an open interview.

“If a team truly aspire to reach the FIFA World Cup, there is no need to shy away from any opponent. Facing Egypt, Morocco and South Africa presents a tremendous opportunity. I believe it’s a blessing.”

“We need to dispel the notion that this is a ‘Group of Death’. In African football, there are no small teams anymore."

“The key is to prepare very well. A lesser known nation can surprise everyone if they come prepared.” He added.

The top two teams from the three first round groups along with the two third best finishers will qualify for the quarterfinal of the U20 AFCON. The semifinalists of the competition will qualify for the 2025 FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile.
