The African Football Confederation (CAF) took the decision to increase the number of participants in the U17 African Cup of Nations from 12 to 16. The move allowed Somalia to book their place in the tournament which is slated for March and April 2025 in Morocco.

The CAF executive committee approved the new format of the U17 AFCON last week. The Somalia Football Federation (SFF) confirmed the new development in a statement. It is the first time that the tournament will be played under 16 national sides.

Somalia finished third in the CECAFA region qualifying games in Uganda back in December 2024. They beat South Sudan to get third where Uganda crowned champions beating Tanzania. SFF stated the team will now aspire to take positive results in the tourney and qualifying for the FIFA U17 World Cup is their main goal.

Somalia managed back to back qualification to the U17 AFCON. In 2023 Somalia made their debut in Algeria finishing last of their group after collecting only a single point.
