União Desportiva do Songo (UD Songo) FC coach Mark Harrison believes the scales are tipped in his team’s favour to win the Mozambique Cup. The Englishman said this in an interview with Pan-Africa Football after UD Songo came from behind to beat Costa do Sol 3-1 in a semifinal match in Maputo on Tuesday.

The hosts had gone ahead when Malawian striker Richard Mbulu intercepted UD Songo’s sloppy clearance before scoring into the empty net. However, the Tete-based side responded with an equalizer from Lau King in the 19th minute before veterans Elias Dominguez Pelembe’s 64th minute and John Banda’s 90th minute goals completed the turnaround.

Reacting to the win, Harrison said his wards dominated the game and deserved to win by a bigger margin.

“We played well. We won 3-1 and probably we could have won it by five to six goals. We had chances. To be fair, we gave away the goal against Costa do Sol. It was a bad back-pass, their striker intercepted it and scored. That is the only real chance they had,” he said.

The former South Africa’s Chippa United mentor has since urged his players to keep their feet on the ground as they look forward to the final on November 30 2024.

“We have been playing very well. The performance has been very good. Results have been good. We are in good form. We are confident. I am sure we can finish the job and win it. [However], we have to stay focused. Winning the semifinal is only half the job so we have to finish it off. Whoever we end up playing it will be a tough game,” he said.

US Songo will meet in the final either Ferroviário da Beira or Ferroviário de Maputo who will clash in another semifinal on Wednesday.
