Uganda’s U17 men’s national team, the Cubs, kick off their 2025 AFCON U17 campaign with a tough opening fixture against hosts Morocco on Sunday, March 30, at El Bachir Stadium in Mohammedia.

The high-stakes clash will serve as a litmus test for Uganda’s young talents as they set their sights on securing a ticket to the FIFA U17 World Cup. Preparations have been intense, with the Cubs engaging in high-profile friendlies both at home and in Morocco.

Despite suffering narrow defeats (3-2 against Burkina Faso and 4-3 against Cameroon), head coach Brian Ssenyondo remains upbeat, emphasizing that these experiences have strengthened his team ahead of the continental showdown.

Leading Uganda’s attack is the red-hot James Bogere, who has already found the back of the net three times in the pre-tournament warm-ups. He will be supported by a solid core, including captain Richard Okello, midfield engine Isima Magala, and defensive stalwart Derrick Ssozi—all expected to play key roles in the Cubs’ quest for success.

The team’s journey to the AFCON U17 finals was marked by triumph, having secured their spot by winning the CECAFA U17 title in emphatic fashion. A 2-1 victory over Tanzania in the final at Nakivubo Stadium cemented their place on the grand stage, making this Uganda’s third appearance at the tournament

With the tournament doubling as a qualifier for the FIFA U17 World Cup in Qatar—where 10 African nations will earn tickets—the Cubs are determined to make their mark.

Can Uganda’s rising stars handle the pressure and upset the hosts in their opening showdown? The journey to glory begins now.
