Vipers SC needed a last-gasp equalizer to avoid defeat against Express FC in a thrilling 2-2 draw at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo on Friday.
Express looked to be cruising to a famous win after Emmanuel Wasswa’s first-half brilliance gave them a two-goal cushion. The midfielder struck in the 20th minute with a header off a rebound and followed it up six minutes later with a stunning curler, a definite contender for goal of the season.
But Vipers, top of the table and fighting to stay ahead of the chasing pack, mounted a comeback in the second half. Allan Okello pulled one back just eight minutes after the restart, before substitute Gusto Mulongo dramatically netted the equalizer deep into added time thanks to skipper Milton Karisa assist, the final kick of the match in the fifth minute of stoppage time.
The result extends Vipers' winless run on the road but keeps them top of the log with 53 points, two clear of NEC, whom they host next week in a potentially title-deciding clash.
Express, meanwhile, climb to 9th with 29 points from 23 games. Earlier in the day, Lugazi FC and UPDF FC served up an entertaining 2-2 draw in Najjembe. Sam Ssemugugu and Emmanuel Obua were on target for the hosts, while Samuel Ssekamatte and Joseph Janjali found the net for the army side.
The closely fought contest leaves UPDF in 10th on 29 points, with Lugazi two points below them. Match Day 23 concludes tonight under the lights at MTN Omondi Stadium as KCCA FC host Bul FC in another highly anticipated encounter.
