Vipers SC return to league action for the first time since the tragic passing of their Nigerian forward, Abubakar Lawal, as they take on Mbarara City under the Kitende floodlights on Sunday.
Lawal’s sudden and mysterious demise on Monday sent shockwaves through the club and the entire Ugandan football fraternity. As they battle the Ankole Lions—coached by former Vipers tactician Livingstone Mbabazi—the Venoms will be playing for more than just three points; they will be honoring the memory of their fallen teammate.
A win or draw will see John Ayala Luyinda and Fred Muhumuza’s side reclaim the top spot in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League after NEC temporarily took over following a 2-0 victory against Lugazi FC on Saturday.
Vipers are also seeking a second victory over Mbarara City in less than two weeks, having defeated them 2-0 in the Uganda Cup round of 32.
Villa Targets Top Five as They Visit UPDF
SC Villa, Uganda’s record league champions, travel to Bombo for a clash with UPDF FC, looking to build on their positive start to the second round. The Jogoos edged URA FC 1-0 last time out following a stalemate against Wakiso Giants and are also through to the Stanbic Uganda Cup last 16.
Currently sitting 8th on the log with 24 points, a win would propel Villa into the top five, while their hosts, UPDF FC, are just a point behind on 21.
KCCA FC Desperate to End Poor Run at Maroons
At Luzira, KCCA FC will be out to redeem themselves after a dismal run of form, having won just once in their last ten league outings.
The Kasasiro Boys, currently 7th with 24 points, face a Maroons side that sits 9th with 23 points. KCCA will be hoping to replicate their dominant 5-0 victory from the reverse fixture earlier this season.
Monday, 3rd March 2025; Express FC vs Wakiso Giants FC – Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo (7:00 PM) Live on FUFA TV & Sanyuka Prime TV.
