Vipers SC secured a slim 1-0 victory over Maroons FC at St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende on Monday to end the first round of the StarTimes Uganda Premier League as league leaders.
Moses Waiswa's 18th-minute strike from a well taken free kick was enough to seal the win.
Vipers head into the break with an impressive record of 10 wins, four draws and just one loss, accumulating 34 points.
They are four points clear of NEC, who could narrow the gap to one with a win over Mbale Heroes on Tuesday.
Maroons sit fifth with 22 points but could drop depending on Tuesday's results.
Express dominant in Bombo
Earlier, Express FC eased past UPDF FC with a 2-0 win at the Bombo Military Grounds. Second-half goals from Conrad Ssenjogera and Sam Ssenyonjo, the latter converting a penalty, secured all three points for the Red Eagles.
Express now occupies third place with 25 points, but KCCA FC could overtake them if they defeat Mbarara City on Tuesday.
Bright Stars and Lugazi share the spoils
In Kavumba, Soltilo Bright Stars and Lugazi FC settled for a 1-1 draw. Nelson Mandela put Lugazi ahead in the 41st minute but Alex Mandera’s equalizer in the 63rd minute ensured the hosts salvaged a point.
Looking ahead
Matchday 15 concludes on Tuesday with five fixtures before the league takes a break to accommodate preparations for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).
CHAN 2024, co-hosted by Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania, will run from February 1 to 28. The league is set to resume after the tournament concludes.
